Guide: How To Root Android Phone (New Method)

Rooting your Desire won't void your warranty (you must have faith about the warranty though) since it's not NexusOne that will leave a trace (an unclasped lock) even if you have unrooted back.

Download the stock rom for HTC Desire from XDA-Developers to unroot your phone so that you can claim the warranty after that.

The new method is way simpler than the old one, this method is called as 'unrevoked' (it's best for noob). If your PC has all the drivers needed , then just need to run the unrevoked then plug in your phone using the USB cable and you are done. Simple right? This guide is for 'HTC Desire' (AMOLED Screen only). Okay, let's get it started;

For the 'Old Method' click here

Requirements:
1. Unrevoked v3.1, download here
2. Android driver, download here
3. HTC Sync (Download from HTC website and install it)
4. PC with Windows OS (XP, Vista or 7)
5. HTC Desire with AMOLED Screen

Rooting Steps:
1a. Run the 'reflash_package.exe' you downloaded and extract it into an empty folder.
1b. Extract 'android-usb-driver.zip' you downloaded into a different empty folder.

2. Turn off your phone, then turn it back on while holding 'volume down' button. (you will boot it into the HBOOT menu by doing this step)

3. Connect the phone to your PC with a USB cable and wait for the phone to say HBOOT USB PLUG on screen.

4. On your PC, open Device Manager (find it in 'Control Panel' or just right click on 'My Computer' and then click properties) and under Other devices, you should now see the Android 1.0 device.

5. Right click on Android 1.0 and click 'Update Driver Software' and choose 'Browse my computer' then select the folder where you extracted 'android-usb-driver.zip'. Once done, reboot and disconnect the phone.

6. After you installed HTC Sync on your PC (you should have installed it from the begining before you do these rooting steps), now uninstall it from 'Control Panel' but don't uninstall HTC Driver Installer. After you are done uninstalling, reboot your PC.

7. From your Phone, go to Settings>Connect to PC>Default connection type and choose Disk drive then untick ‘Ask Me’

8. Then, go to Settings>Applications>Development and then tick USB Debugging.

9. Then, go back to Applications and make sure Unknown Sources is ticked too.

10. Start the reflash.exe in Admin mode [Right Click>Run as Admin, it's only required for Windows Vista and 7]

11. Connect your Desire and wait (it should take about 1-2 minutes)

12. Once completed, your Desire should be in recovery mode and select reboot.

13. You should now have 'Superuser Permission' in applications menu (it means your phone is rooted now) and you are done!!

Hi Maliki...

Just 1 question here... You mentioned about the "unclasped lock" figure at the beginning of your post. Have you actually tried before and confirm there is a clasped lock in Desire?

Just need the confirmation before I jumped into the "dark side".. hehehe

Thanks bro...

Yup, there is no such thing on Desire. You can see now many lowyat users have rooted their phone. So don't worry, you still can claim the warranty after you unroot it.
